Chat with a GET Teacher! Vol.21 Andrew Neale

ピースボートのクルーズにGETプログラムの英語/スペイン語ボランティア講師として乗船してくれた方たちへのインタビュー、“ChatWith a GET Teacher! (GETの先生とおしゃべり)”。
世界中から参加し、多様で豊かなバックグラウンドを持ったGETの先生たち。

そんな先生たちがどうしてピースボートへ参加したのか、ピースボートでどんなことを感じたのか、現在は何をしているのかを聞いていきます。

第21弾の今回は、ピースボートV117に英語講師として参加した Andy(アンディー)のインタビューをお届けします!

1. What were you doing before joining Peace Boat?
ピースボートに乗船する前は何をしていましたか?

I was teaching in Thailand – at a government school and a small English centre that I’d opened at the start of COVID. (I know. Talk about timing?!)

2. How did you find out about Peace Boat or the GET programme, and why did you come on board?
ピースボートやGETプログラムを知ったきっかけと、乗船した理由を教えてください。

I found out whilst researching potential activities for my upcoming 40th birthday. I’d wanted to plan something really special, and Googled Antarctic cruises. I came onboard because I wanted to reconnect with people who care, people who have passions and people who believe in making a difference.

3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher?
GETの先生になって一番楽しかったことは何ですか?

Watching and hearing the students’ language ability develop during the short time we had together (even if they might not have realised). Also, I worked with the most advanced abilities so I was particularly moved by the stories they shared and insights they gave – and their humour!

4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they?
船内ではどのように過ごしましたか?もしイベントを企画していたのなら、どんなものを企画しましたか?

Preparing for and facilitating meaningful 121 sessions was my main priority but I also organized / hosted many other activities which I loved. These included British/European styled pub quizzes in my favorite bar onboard, sharing my perspectives of why Britain left the European Union, a presentation on my lifetime of volunteering, a series of LGBTQ+ Pride events, including the Peace Boat’s first Pride march, as well as all the GET activities (Open classes, Speech Festival, Chat Cafe etc)

5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter?
船内でのお気に入りの出来事や出会いを教えてください。

 Meeting and sharing coffee with the man who started Peace Boat remains the single most impactful part of the entire experience. To think that it all started from a few university friends, who wanted to set sail for a couple of weeks a year, to what it has evolved into, is nothing short of incredible.

6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there?
お気に入りの寄港地はどこで、何をしましたか?

This question is impossible! London will always be the most special, but for personal reasons. Alaska was utterly breath taking, Namibia, incredible, and the Whistler mountain gondola excursion (from Vancouver) was absolutely worth every penny! Sorry, but no way can I choose only one😅

7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat?
ピースボートで過ごした時間から得たものは?

Inspiration, a new-found confidence in myself, and a lifelong connection with several incredible souls

8. Where are you now and what do you do?
今はどこにいて、何をしていますか?

During my time onboard, I realised I have everything I could possibly want / need in Thailand, so I changed what I had initial planned and relocated to Bangkok. On arriving, I secured a great job teaching at a dream school in the best location and I’ve, so far, written the first three books in a children’s story book series. (It’s about a group of animal friends who travel the world on a magical boat – once this first series is finished I’ll focus on publishing).

9. What advice would you give to future teachers?
未来の先生たちへのアドバイスをお願いします。

Commit to the role, and to your students, and don’t forget that they are the sole reason you are on the ship. Everything else is a bonus – the more you give, the more you’ll get back. Oh, and don’t ever be shy: get to know everyone.

10. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español?
英語/スペイン語を上達させたいと思っている生徒さんへのアドバイスをお願いします。

Immerse yourself in English as much as possible but step back to ensure you understand and actively remember what you’re learning: take notes, test yourself at the end of each day, see what you can remember and highlight the things you forget – to then check again the following day. I see language like a jigsaw… little by little, we form a massive continuous picture in the end.

11. Do you have a message for your students?
自身の生徒さんたちへのメッセージをお願いします。

Oh I miss you all so much and want to thank you for so many happy / heartfelt / meaningful moments. And please send your homework to me by the end of the week😂
