1. What were you doing before joining Peace Boat?

Before boarding the Peace Boat, I had been traveling around for a couple of years, teaching English and Yoga to students throughout Central America and Southeast Asia.

2. How did you find out about Peace Boat or the GET programme, and why did you come on board?

I found out about the GET programme on Workaway.info while exploring work exchange opportunities in Japan. My jaw dropped as I read the profile. Between the length and scope of the global voyage and the opportunity to teach in such a meaningful way…all for the sake of PEACE… I became instantly obsessed with making this experience happen.

3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher?

Being a GET teacher was everything I had originally imagined and much, much more. What I enjoyed most and will cherish forever is the genuine bonding with the teams, students, and passengers.

4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they?

Being a GET teacher will keep you busy! The day was full of lessons, events (I had a lot of fun hosting American holiday events and sharing Texan music), meetings, researching and preparing port orientations, dance parties, deck walks, and the occasional nap in a lounge chair with the ocean breeze.

5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter?

I loved the Open GET Spanish lessons and the nightly dance parties at Wheelhouse Bar!

6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there?

The honest answer is that every port was magical in its own way and I could never choose an actual favorite. My go-to answer is that Greece was mighty special with the Japan Grace tour of the local Yoga studio and garden.

7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat?

I’ve gained priceless, powerful memories and connections that I’ll hold close to my heart for as long as I live.

8. Where are you now and what do you do?

Now I’m teaching 3rd grade English and Social Studies at a public school in Houston, Texas!

9. What advice would you give to future teachers?

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS! Live and love the unplugged life. Listen to your body. Love yourself, your students, and your team. Enjoy the sometimes bumpy, but usually breathtakingly beautiful ride.

10. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español?

Apply, apply, apply. Start with your needs: shopping, traveling, etc. then learn and practice the related vocabulary and phrases. Take your interests and hobbies, and learn and practice those phrases and terms. Your brain will best retain the language you’re learning when you’re practicing through life and experience.

11. Do you have a message for your students?

Thank you for having me as your teacher. Thank you for the laughter and for expressing yourself so purely in the language that you’re learning so well!

Thank you, Mack!!
