ChatWith a GET Teacher! Vol.16 Chris Buxton

1. What were you doing before joining Peace Boat?

I am actually a German national. My husband and I had decided to move from Germany to lovely, sunny, southern Italy. I was working as a self employed International Language and Business Coach.

2. How did you find out about Peace Boat or the GET programme, and why did you come on board?

I had read about Peace Boat on the work away website.
I joined because the offer sounded too good to be true – I would be able to combine my two passions: teaching and travelling. How cool is that?!

3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher?

Seeing my wonderful students – the oldest being over 80 years old – develop, improve and gain confidence.

4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they?

Time on board seemed to fly, I was always busy: preparing lessons or the time in the next port, chatting to the other amazing GET teachers, preparing events or meetings, teaching … and last but not least enjoying some of the delicious food on board. I also organised a series of Marketing Workshops and the first ever German regular Get Together for anyone interested in practising their German.

5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter?

I was very moved by the speech festival with the students. It was truly amazing to see my beginner students – some of them being rather shy – standing up and delivering an entire speech in English.

6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there?

My favorite port was Singapore where we had organised a Challenge Program for the students. They really had to step out of their comfort zone and did super well!!!

7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat?

You are never too old to embark on an amazing adventure – I was 57 at the beginning of the voyage.

8. Where are you now and what do you do?

I am about to leave for Malaysia where my husband and I are planning to live for the next 5 years. I will continue my work as a Language and Business Coach and get involved in relevant local volunteering opportunities.

9. What advice would you give to future teachers?

Go for it, be open minded and grateful for this amazing opportunity. Enjoy, because time is really going to fly.

10. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español?

Sign up for the GET program. It is much more than a private language course with highly motivated teachers. It will be an enriching, fun and memorable experience.

11. Do you have a message for your students?

It had been a real pleasure teaching all of you. Keep going with your English and remember: Practice makes perfect.

Thank you, Chris!!
