Chat with a GET Teacher! Vol.19 Alexander Gruft

ピースボートのクルーズにGETプログラムの英語/スペイン語ボランティア講師として乗船してくれた方たちへのインタビュー、“ChatWith a GET Teacher! (GETの先生とおしゃべり)”。
世界中から参加し、多様で豊かなバックグラウンドを持ったGETの先生たち。

そんな先生たちがどうしてピースボートへ参加したのか、ピースボートでどんなことを感じたのか、現在は何をしているのかを聞いていきます。

第19弾の今回は、ピースボートV117に英語講師として参加した Alex(アレックス)のインタビューをお届けします!

1. What were you doing before joining Peace Boat?
ピースボートに乗船する前は何をしていましたか?

Before volunteering on Peace Boat I was doing a working holiday in Japan and staying at various places. Finally I was working at a restaurant and a ski rental shop on a working holiday in a hot spring and ski resort town in Nagano prefecture.

2. How did you find out about Peace Boat or the GET programme, and why did you come on board?
ピースボートやGETプログラムを知ったきっかけと、乗船した理由を教えてください。

I found out about GET program from Workaway website, where I was browsing for short-term work in Japan. I was deeply inspired by Peace Boat’s cause to address issues globally and locally; and was very keen to apply to volunteer for the organization.

3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher?
GETの先生になって一番楽しかったことは何ですか?

Being able to help the passengers have a positive and unforgettable experience was my favorite part of being a volunteer aboard the cruise. The GET teacher role enabled we volunteers to connect closely with our students as we helped them develop their English language skills.

4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they?
船内ではどのように過ごしましたか?もしイベントを企画していたのなら、どんなものを企画しましたか?

The countless events and activities hosted by staff and passengers on board allowed me to fill my time with interesting and illuminating engagements. I was given the opportunity to participate in nightly ballroom dance classes hosted by a passenger, and I also enjoyed the frequent salsa lessons offered. I organized one of my own events which was an introduction to the basics of Shotokai style karate.

5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter?
船内でのお気に入りの出来事や出会いを教えてください。

My favorite onboard events were the mid-voyage and final presentations, in which passengers and staff demonstrated skills or activities that they had been involved in while on board. I also enjoyed the summer festival. It had a fun and lively atmosphere and being held on the open top deck, it had people dressed for the occasion and enjoying a discounted bar and a selected music playlist.

6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there?
お気に入りの寄港地はどこで、何をしましたか?

My personal peak of the voyage was in New York, which boasted perfect weather celebrating our arrival in the American continent. I enjoyed walking through the city with my roommate, and meeting with a friend visiting who I hadn’t seen in 10 years. The culturally diverse and zealous atmosphere was a pleasure to be able to observe on our two-day visit to the city.

7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat?
ピースボートで過ごした時間から得たものは?

The perspective gained through the circumnavigation of the globe was my greatest gift gained from my time on Peace Boat. Being able to share the journey with a diverse range of people and grow together as well as individually was to me the cornerstone of the experience.

8. Where are you now and what do you do?
今はどこにいて、何をしていますか?

Now I am back in Japan after returning to my home country Australia for a few months, and am teaching extracurricular English classes at a university in Tokyo.

9. What advice would you give to future teachers?
未来の先生たちへのアドバイスをお願いします。

I would advise to push through any discomfort that may arise, and positively experience new things as much possible. Leaving life off board behind for a while gives energy to be involved fully in the voyage.

10. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español?
英語/スペイン語を上達させたいと思っている生徒さんへのアドバイスをお願いします。

For learning English, I recommend digging into what you like most about the language, and channeling that into a fun method of study. Conversing as much as you can even with uncertainty is good too; not worrying about making mistakes.

11. Do you have a message for your students?
自身の生徒さんたちへのメッセージをお願いします。

My students were bright, enthusiastic and kind. I am very grateful for the positive energy they brought with their enrolment in the program, and glad that we were able to make this voyage together.
