Chat with a GET Teacher! Vol.25 Arturo Toyama Higuchi

1. What were you doing before joining Peace Boat?

Before boarding Peace Boat, I was working as a freelance online teacher. I taught English, Spanish, and Japanese while traveling around the world. All I needed to work was my laptop and a stable Wi-Fi connection.

2. How did you find out about Peace Boat or the GET programme, and why did you come on board?

A relative who was a CC on the 116th voyage told me about the GET Programme. I met him before boarding and again in Peru, which was one of the ports of call. I decided to come on board because I wanted to experience a world cruise, and because everyone I met through him seemed genuinely happy. It felt like a dream job, and joining Peace Boat meant achieving one of my most ambitious goals.

3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher?

What I enjoyed most was being able to interact with people from all over the world. Since I had been working online, I really missed face-to-face communication instead of talking through a screen. I also loved visiting countries and remote places I had never been to before, such as South Africa and Easter Island.

4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they?

As a GET teacher, I was quite busy with private classes, Open GETs, and program-related activities. I also organized several SOEs, including Spanish Bingo, talks about Japanese emigration to Peru, the story of my Okinawan grandmother, and Spanish storytelling sessions for children. In addition, I participated in various Peace Boat events such as the talent show and karaoke nights.

5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter?

It’s hard to choose, but I loved the karaoke nights at Legends Bar and having dinner with my friends and students at Marquis. Dancing Chu Chu Wa with everyone was also a highlight! 😄

6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there?

Peru was my favorite port, especially because I was able to show my home country to the coordinators and the other GET teachers.

7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat?

Happiness. I truly felt joy throughout the entire experience—from the moment I applied until the cruise ended. I also gained a lot of friends from around the world!

8. Where are you now and what do you do?

I am currently in Peru, but I continue traveling independently and teaching online.

9. What advice would you give to future teachers?

Be open-minded and flexible, and always think not only about yourself but about what is best for the group as a whole.

10. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español?

Be consistent—learning a language is a marathon, not a sprint. Try to find fun and enjoyable ways to study so the process feels motivating.

11. Do you have a message for your students?

I miss you all. I treasure every moment we shared on the cruise, and I’m grateful that I’ve been able to meet some of you again even after the voyage ended.

Thank you & Gracias, Arturo!!
