ピースボートのクルーズにGETプログラムのボランティア先生として乗船してくれた方たちへのインタビュー、
“ChatWith a GET Teacher! (GETの先生とおしゃべり)”。
世界中から参加し、多様で豊かなバックグラウンドを持ったGETの先生たち。
そんな先生たちがどうしてピースボートへ参加したのか、ピースボートでどんなことを感じたのか、現在は何をしているのかを聞いていきます！
今回は第2回目のインタビュー。100回クルーズ(2018年12月出発)と103回クルーズ(2019年12月出発)と2回ピースボートクルーズに参加した Robbie (ロビー) にお話を聞きました！
1. What were you doing before coming on board Peace Boat?
(ピースボートに乗船する前は、何をしていましたか？)
Before volunteering as a GET teacher for the 100th voyage, I was a U.S. Peace Corps Education volunteer in the Philippines. I lived in the remote town of Moalboal, teaching university students, developing libraries, publishing a Bisaya-English children’s book with my students and coordinating international exchange, service learning and literary opportunities for youth.
100回クルーズのGETの先生としてボランティアをする前は、米国の Peace Corps* のボランティアとしてフィリピンにいました。Moalboal という郊外に住み活動をしていました。例えば、大学生に教えたり、図書館を改良したり、バサヤ語と英語の子供向けの本を学生たちと作ったり、国際交流を企画したりしていました。その他にも若者向けの社会貢献型の体験学習や、文学に触れる機会を作っていました。
*Peace Coprs：アメリカ合衆国連邦政府が運営するボランティア計画。ボランティアスタッフを開発途上国へと派遣し、現地の支援を行うことを目的とする。
2. Why did you come on board?（ピースボートやGETのプログラムは、どうやって知りましたか？）
When I was a student, I circumnavigated the world on Semester at Sea (university study abroad program on a ship that travels around the world) – it was a transformative educational experience to read about the Hagia Sophia one day, and then be transfixed by its beauty while sipping on apple tea the very next day!
学生の頃、Semester at Sea というプログラム（船で世界を巡りながら学ぶ、大学の留学プログラム）を通して世界を旅したことがありました。アヤソフィアについて読んだまさに翌日に、アップルティーを飲みながらその美しさに釘付けになる。そんなすごい学びの経験をしました。
Believing in the power of learning through travel, when people asked me what I would do if I won the lottery, I’d tell them, “Charter a ship to sail around the world, like Semester at Sea, but with a humanitarian focus; and fill it with international passengers of all life-experiences, united by enthusiasm to serve others and celebrate diversity!” I couldn’t believe such a program actually existed…and I didn’t have to wait to win the lottery for it to happen!
私は旅を通した学びの力を信じています。もし宝くじに当たったらどうする？と聞かれた時には、「船をチャーターして、Semester at Sea のように世界を旅をしたい。でももっと人道的なトピックに特化し、あらゆる年代の国際的な人が参加していて、他の人への思いやりと多様性を大事にしている、そんな船を出したい」なんて、言っていました。なので、まさにそのようなプログラムがあることが信じられませんでした。宝くじに当たるのを待つ必要がなくなりました！
3. What did you enjoy most about being a GET Teacher? （GETの先生として、特にやりがいを感じたことはどんなことですか？）
I like that everyone who is a part of the GET family truly wants to be there and are committed to creating a flourishing GET program. The teachers, staff and students alike are incredible, motivated people with amazing stories and experiences – and the GET program provides a wonderful platform for these stories to intersect, and for us to create new stories together.
GETファミリーの皆が、GETプログラムを良いものにしようと本当に一生懸命であったことがまず１つです。先生、スタッフ、生徒が皆すばらしく、それぞれにやろう！という気持ちがありました。そしてすばらしい物語や経験を持っている人たちばかりでした。GETプログラムは、それらの物語が交わる、そして新しい物語を一緒に作るのに、すばらしいプラットフォームだと思います。
When traveling, GET teachers and students are usually excited about connection – not just seeing a place for its surface beauty, but meeting and interacting with its people, too. Through the GET Program’s variety of English/Español immersion offerings, student-centered, task-based lessons and Challenge Programs, GET teachers support GET students – and other GET teachers – in their goal of having these “deeper” and interactive experiences in port. It’s wonderful seeing GET students’ confidence and English/Español improve, and new friendships arise, through meaningful avenues.
旅をする中で、GETの先生や生徒たちはつながりを大事にしていたと思います。ただ表面的な美しさを見るだけではなく、そこに住む人々との交流を楽しんでいました。
GETの英語やスペイン語のプログラムは、生徒が学ぶ言語にどっぷりと浸かり、生徒が主役でタスクベースのレッスンやチャレンジプログラムを通して、寄港地でより深く人々と関われるように、先生たちがサポートします。生徒たちが自信をつけ、英語・スペイン語を学んでいき、新しい友情を築いているのを見るのは、とても嬉しいことでした。
4. How did you spend your time on board? Did you organize any events, and if so, what were they? (船内ではどのように過ごしていましたか？もし自分で船内でイベントを企画していたら、どんなイベントでしたか？)
The Peace Boat provides a unique opportunity for passengers to share their interests, talents and passions. Whenever I had a spare moment, I attended lectures by visiting teachers/mizuans and passengers, learning about one man’s solo bike trip around Japan; another’s passion for jellyfish; slipper weaving with t-shirts; a hibakusha’s harrowing experience and the hope she spreads in every port by sharing her story and advocating nuclear disarmament.
ピースボートは、参加者１人１人がそれぞれの関心や才能、そして熱意を共有出来る機会を与えてくれます。時間があるときは、水先案内人（ゲストスピーカー）や参加者による講座や企画に参加していました。ある男性は自転車日本一周ひとり旅について、他の人はクラゲについての熱い想いを、またTシャツでスリッパを編んでいる人たちもいました。また被爆者の方は恐ろしい経験と想いを伝え、全ての寄港地での核軍縮を訴えかけていました。
You can literally create the voyage you imagine. For my self-organized events, I wanted to share my culture and passions, so I taught ukulele (in Chinese, Japanese and English – thanks to collaboration with volunteer translators/CCs), hula, lei-making, Bisaya language and sharing about my U.S. Peace Corps volunteer experience. It was exciting to perform the ukulele and hula together at Polynesian night, and see passengers give ribbon leis to each other as a gesture of aloha (love).
自分が想像した旅を、言葉通り作り出すことができます。私は自主企画で、自分の文化や大事にしていることを共有したかったので、ウクレレを中文、日本語、英語で教えたり（ボランティア通訳・CCのおかげです！）フラ、レイ作り、ビサヤ語、そのほかにも米国のPeace Corpsでのボランティア経験についてもお話ししました。ポリネシアン・ナイトというイベントでウクレレとフラを披露したのも楽しかったです。またアロハ（愛）の印として、参加者の人たちがリボンのレイを互いにプレゼントしあうのを見るのも嬉しかったです。
5. What was your favorite on board event or encounter? （船内でのイベントや出会いで印象に残っているのは？）
I was teaching an Open GET lesson on “Turning Negatives into Positives” while sailing through Ushuaia. The captain suddenly made an announcement that we were passing by glaciers, so my students apologetically left class to watch. Both in awe of teaching in the middle of the ocean with incredible views, and a little bummed I had to stay behind with my PowerPoint in case students came back…suddenly a fellow GET teacher came by to see if I was still in class. He encouraged me to go outside and look at the glaciers, while he stood in for me. It was really touching to see how thoughtful and supportive my fellow GET teachers were…he definitely became the example of a silver lining for my lesson!
ウシュアイア（アルゼンチン）へ向けて航海中に、私がオープンGET（無料公開レッスン）で、「ネガティブをポジティブに変えよう」というレッスンをしていた時のことです。突然船長が「現在氷河の近くを航行しています」とアナウンスすると、生徒たちは申し訳なさそうにレッスンを抜けて、氷河を見に行きました。こんなすごい景色の海の上で教えていることに驚きつつ、誰かが戻ってきたときのためにパワーポイントとその場に残らなきゃいけないことを少し残念に思っていました。すると、同僚のGETの先生が私の様子を見に来てくれて、私の代わりにそこにいるから、外へ行って氷河を見て来なよ、と言ってくれたんです。
同僚の先生たちの、思いやりやサポートに、触れて嬉しくなりました。彼は、私のレッスンの「困難の中の希望の光」の良い例となりました！
6. What was your favorite port and what did you do there? （お気に入りの寄港地はどこですか？そこでどんなことをしましたか？）
As stunning as the sights that we sail to are, meeting people is always my favorite part of visiting new ports. In Papua New Guinea, I joined a cultural exchange, where we met a local village. One of the best moments was standing in a big circle with Chinese and Japanese passengers, Singaporean mizuan, volunteer teachers and translators, teaching local children the hokey pokey in Japanese, English and Chinese. During the evening, we watched a traditional fire dance, and I taught some children the hula. So many smiles; so much laughter; so much connection and celebration of our shared humanity. It was one of those moments where you sigh happily, “Ahh…Peace Boat.”
私たちが旅する中で見るすばらしい光景ももちろんですが、新しい寄港地で人々に出会うことも私の中で楽しみにしていることです。パプアニューギニアでは文化交流ツアーに参加し、地元の村を訪れました。特に覚えているのは、中国と日本の参加者、シンガポールの水案、ボランティアのGETの先生や通訳が大きな輪となり、hokey pokey (*英語の歌) を日本語、英語、中文で教えたことです。夜には伝統的な火踊りを見せてもらい、私はフラを何人かの子供たちに教えました。本当にたくさんの笑顔、笑い声、つながり、そして同じ人間であることの喜び。「ああ、ピースボート だなぁ」と幸せなため息が出る、そんな瞬間でした。
7. What did you gain from your time with Peace Boat? （ピースボートで過ごしたことで得たことは？）
…another difficult question! これもまた難しい質問ですね・・・！
I gained lifelong friendships, adventure, strengthened skills in time management and organization, laughter in many languages and an incredible experience I’ll treasure forever!
一生ものの友情、冒険、時間管理や企画のスキルの向上、たくさんの言語で笑ったこと。これからずっと大事にしていきたいすばらしい経験です！
8. What advice can you give to a student who wants to improve their English/Español? （英語やスペイン語を学んでいる生徒さんへ、何かアドバイスはありますか？）
Chase after your language dreams! Learning a new language opens up avenues for new friendships and ways of seeing the world – you have everything to gain and nothing to lose! The Peace Boat and GET community is incredibly supportive and only wants to help you reach your English/Español goals! So boldly put yourself out there, make mistakes, learn from them, improve and enjoy the learning process!
みなさんの語学の夢を、ぜひ叶えてください！新しい言語を学ぶことは、新しい友情を築くこと、そして新しい目で世界を見ることに繋がります。得るものばかりで、失うものは何一つありません！ピースボート とGETコミュニティは、みなさんの英語とスペイン語の目標が達成出来るように、いつでもサポートしてくれます。ですので勇気を持って、たくさん失敗しそこから学ぶことを楽しんでください！
9. Do you have a message for your students? （生徒さんたちへメッセージをお願いします。）
Thank you for making my voyage so meaningful and memorable. I loved seeing you every day, learning from you, seeing your friendships bloom and talents shine at GET events and watching your English skills and confidence grow! Best wishes in all you dream and do…lots of aloha!
私の旅を意義のある、思い出深いものにしてくれて、ありがとうございました！皆さんと毎日顔を合わせ、皆さんから学びました。GETイベントで友情が生まれ、才能を発揮している姿、英語のスキルや自身が育っているのを見るのが本当に好きでした。
みなさんの全ての夢へエールを… そしてたくさんのアロハを！
